How do I know if I need my sensor cleaned?

Sensors are magnets for fine dust particles. If you change your lenses in anything other than a laboratory clean room, you’ll need to get your sensor cleaned at some point. We recommend a minimum of once every six months.

How do I know if my sensor is dirty?

Try the following in your camera’s manual mode:

  • Set your camera to its lowest native ISO setting, usually ISO 100 or 200.
  • Find a bright, solid color background such as a piece of white paper or blue sky.
  • Fill the frame with the chosen background, set your lens to manual, and throw everything completely out of focus.
  • Set your aperture to f/16 or f/22
  • Adjust your shutter speed to get your highlights in range.
  • Snap a picture in your highest quality and largest file size setting. The more detail, the more you’ll see!
  • Review your image on a large monitor. If you see defined black spots, dark circle blobs, hairs, lint, etc. it’s time for a sensor cleaning!
How do I prep for sensor cleaning?

We’ll obviously need your camera, and ideally a fully-charged battery. You can deliver with a mounted lens, or even better, just the secured body cap. We don’t need a memory card or any other attachments.

Is there anything I can do to prevent dust from accumulating on my sensor?

Sure! Try to avoid excessively changing your lens in dirty environments. If you do change your lens in the wild, aim the front of the camera down and let gravity help keep the dust away. If it’s windy, try to block the camera with your body or something else when you change your lens.

When you get home, let your camera body acclimate to the temperature change for an hour or so first. Humidity and condensation on the sensor will cause any dust to stick to the sensor. Remove the lens or body cap from your camera, and gently blow out the mirror/sensor with an air bulb, available for purchase in store if you don’t have one handy.

How do I know if I need my lens calibrated?

If you’re producing sharp images but they always seem to be focused slightly in front or behind your target, your lens may need to be adjusted to your camera body. Not all camera bodies can be calibrated. Email print@f32photo.com if you have any questions about your particular model.
